P-Series ONTs and Ethernet OAM

The P-Series ONTs play a key role in Calix Ethernet service assurance solutions via implementation of Ethernet OAM standards over GPON and Active (point-to-point) Ethernet. The most common applications demanding service assurance tools include mobile backhaul, MEF wholesale, and business services. Ethernet OAM is supported on all Calix 760GX ONTs.

Ethernet OAM features can be activated on the ONTs and managed remotely using the Calix Management System (CMS) and standards-based SNMP managers. CMS in conjunction with the ONTs can manage the service level agreements (SLAs), provision, and report on performance and faults with notification on alarms and event conditions. When implementing an OAM maintenance domain, these ONTs can be provisioned by CMS to act as maintenance intermediate points (MIPs) or maintenance end points (MEPs), and act as Ethernet NIDs in compliance with MEF 9, MEF 14, and MEF-17 standards.

The Calix 760GX ONTs support the unique Calix auto-detect technology, enabling both GPON or point-to-point GE transport while supporting Ethernet OAM features. The Calix Ethernet OAM implementation draws from a wide range of standards, which together make up a set of tools leveraged by the Metro Ethernet Forum:

  • IEEE 803.3-Clause 57 (802.3ah) link OAM (link discovery and monitoring)
  • IEEE 802.1ag for fault management (link trace, loop back, CC with RDI)
  • ITU Y.1731 for in-service performance monitoring (frame loss, delay, jitter)
  • IETF RFC2544 reflector (out of service testing and service turn-up)
